EOD Technician IMAS Level 3

Course Description

The EOD Technician IMAS Level 3 is a 3-week programme building on the knowledge, understanding and experience of the Level 2 Team Leader, enhancing their skill set to deal with larger and more complex EOD tasks and designed to qualify individuals for roles in management of EOD Operations.  The course aims to produce candidates trained to meet the specification given in UN IMAS 09-30:

“In In addition to the skills of a Level 1 and 2 (EOD) qualification, a Level 3 (EOD) qualification enables the holder to conduct render-safe procedures and demolitions up to 50 kg net explosive quantity (NEQ) on a wide range of specific types of explosive ordnance on which the individual has been trained. A Level 3 (EOD) operator may authorize in writing a Level 2 (EOD) operator to conduct tasks in a range of environments and to make decisions on safe movement of EO.”

Military or police personnel responsible for EO operations, personnel involved in Humanitarian Mine Action. This course is suitable for personnel who are looking to advance in their career.

What’s involved?

This is a learner centred course delivered face-to-face and comprising of 15 guided learning days. Delivery offers theoretical and practical scenarios to provide context for all learning outcomes. Each outcome is designed and structured to assist individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required by the Level 2 EOD Team Leader.

Continued assessment is conducted during the course where learners must demonstrate competence for all outcomes listed. Practical assessments include live explosive handling.

Pre-requisite:

Learners must have previous operational experience at Level 2, be a minimum of 18 years of age, must be physically capable of completing the practical assessment. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English.

What will I learn

The techniques required by the Level 3 Technician in EOD operations:

• Arming cycle and firing actions for common Land Service and Air Dropped Weapon fuzes together with its application during Render Safe Procedures
• Munitions design including Fragmentation, Blast and HEAT systems
• Identification of Land Service and Air Dropped Weapons
• Use of detection systems
• Disposal methods including deflagration, high order and low order techniques
• Theory of the propagation of detonation and the use of donor charges
• Deployment and awareness of IEDs
• Preparation of Render Safe Procedures for specified munitions
• Identification of all ammunition types by function and purpose
• Identification of Air Dropped Weapons by function and purpose
• Use of IMAS in support of EOD operations
• Minefield threat assessment based on patterns and tactics
• Use of the complete range of EOD weapons and equipments
• Protective works & remediation
• Manage logistic disposal operations including demolitions, propellant burns and the use of burning tanks – max NEQ 50kg
• Assessment of munitions for movement
• Technical & Non-Technical Survey
• Assessment of evidence from survey & reconnaissance
• Production of UXO education literature
• Management and leadership qualities required of a Level 3 Technician
• Investigation of EOD related accidents
