Targeting Muscle Synergies to Optimise Movement Retraining for the Neck and Shoulder
Part of our Muscle Synergies Series
Part of our Muscle Synergies Series, this module is specifically designed to help clinicians deliver targeted movement retraining to successfully manage each patient’s pain, pathology, and compromised function of the neck and shoulder.
The main focus of this course is to use targeted retraining of muscle synergies, guided by a clinical reasoning framework and time-efficient assessment, as the intervention of choice. The course provides clinicians with a structured process to manage the complexity of neck and shoulder conditions.
It supports clinicians in achieving better patient outcomes through the identification and management of movement impairments associated with current neck and shoulder problems.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Relate movement and synergistic recruitment patterns to pain, recurrence, and functional impairment.
- Understand how changes in muscle synergy patterns influence pain, recurrence, and function.
- Assess and retrain muscle synergies to improve patient movement and function.
- Demonstrate the skills required to improve muscle synergy efficiency.
- Assess loss of extensibility and identify abnormal recruitment substitutions.
- Select appropriate movement retraining strategies that match your patient’s abilities and rehabilitation goals.
- Apply a structured clinical reasoning framework to help patients achieve better clinical outcomes.
